EC presents the Foresight Study on Critical Raw Materials

The European Commission presented on September, 3 the first Foresight Study on Critical Raw Materials for Strategic Technologies and Sectors in the EU and Action Plan on Critical Raw Materials

The Foresight Study, which includes references to raw material supply chains as examples related to resilience,  looks at the supply chains of the nine technologies below used in the three strategic sectors renewable energy, e-mobility, defence and aerospace. It also attempts to provide a first answer, based on available knowledge and models, to where future challenges lie and how competition for resources may evolve.

The nine technologies are:

  • Li-ion battery
  • Fuel cells
  • Wind energy
  • Electric traction motors
  • Photovoltaic (PV) technology
  • Robotics
  • Drones (Unmanned aerial vehicles or UAV)
  • 3D Printing
  • Digital technologies
