New UNEP Report on Mineral Resources Governance in the 21st Century

The United Nations Environmental Programme - International Resource Panel has published the report titled “Mineral Resources Governance in the 21st Century".

Its objective is to provide an in-depth scientific assessment of the global mineral resources industry governance landscape, of the many existing initiatives and of the open issues that need to be addressed within the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals agreed in 2015 by all UN Member States.

The report assesses issues related to the global minerals and metals industry, from artisanal small-scale to large scale production of minerals and metals, of the global mineral resources industry governance landscape, of the many existing initiatives and of the open issues that need to be addressed within the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals agreed in 2015 by all UN Member States. It  concludes with policy-relant recommendations, such as the need for the development of a Global Mineral Resources Governance based on the Sustainable Development License to Operation, the development of transparency based on global reporting standards on mining projects and mining/ metallurgical operations and the creation of an International Mineral Resources Agency. The report is the result of the collaboration of 28 international experts, coordinated by Elias Ayuk, who was up to recently the Director of the United Nations University in Accra, Ghana. Mr. Patrice Christmann co-authored this report. It has been internationally and anonymously peer reviewed by 20 experts.
