Adoption of the European Research Area (ERA) Progress Report 2016

02/01/2017

On 26th  January 2017, the European Commission has adopted  the European Research Area (ERA) Progress Report 2016. This report consists of five parts: the report itself, a Staff Working Document, a background report prepared by our contractor Science-Metrix, a handbook to facilitate the reading of the statistics, and country snapshots for each Member State and Associated Country.

The ERA Progress Report 2016 was developed in close cooperation with Member States, Associated Countries and research stakeholders. It shows the true spirit of partnership that is taking hold in ERA and beyond.

For the first time, the report measures progress over time. On average, the indicators show impressive growth in key sectors. For example, transnational cooperation between Member States grew 7.8% in the years 2010-2014. In addition, the number of international co-publications grew by 3.6% on average over the period 2005-2014, which reflects the increasing internationalisation of science.  Research excellence has also grown an average of 6.4% over the last few years. This is a clear sign that ERA works.

Governments are taking clear political ownership of ERA through their national action plans. This demonstrates a high level of ambition to make further progress based on individual needs.
